So why was I able to learn Chinese and not French? It all comes down to the way I learned. Think back to your high school classes that were teaching you Spanish, French, German, maybe Latin… did anyone in your class actually learn the language? Could anyone actually ever speak fluently? Of course not… that’s because language classes don’t work. Everyone refuses to admit this and the government still forces these foreign language course on our kids, but nobody actually retains any useful skills from them. Sure they can teach you the basics, but after that, you’re not going to make any meaningful progress. Ignore grammar and all that boring stuff. Think about when you were a baby and learning how to speak English for the first time. Did your mom ever teach you grammar? Of course not. You probably didn’t start learning grammar for the first time until you were 8 or 9. But at that time, you could already speak fluently. My SECRET method not only takes the boring stuff out of language learning, it also speeds up the whole process and makes it fun. I remember back in the day before I could speak Chinese fluently… when I was still learning. The way I learned was so rewarding and interesting that I actually got addicted to it. I would sit at work and try to sneak in some “study” behind the bosses back. I would do it on the subway… really whenever I had free time to spare. Chinese became my hobby. It became something I loved to do. In high school I never thought I would say that I loved studying. My grades were awful. It became pretty clear by my junior year that I was not going to be accepted by any of the colleges I wanted to go to. I just couldn’t concentrate on my studies because they were so boring. With that being said, I still tried to put as much time into it as I could, yet I still could only get in a maximum of one hour per day. Even still, I learned it to fluency in less than a year. Whenever I speak Chinese to someone who does not know I can speak Chinese, they always do a double take, just to make sure I’m not Chinese. Mainland Chinese people always think that I was born in Taiwan because I speak Chinese with a perfect Taiwanese accent. Think about that for a second… I don’t have a foreigner accent. I think about all the foreigners who immigrated here to the United States and have been killing themselves in attempt to learn English yet still cannot speak it without an accent. What makes me different from them? Nothing really… I’m not smarter than them or have any special gifts that make language learning easy. Again - It’s all about the way I studied.
